Low Impact Hiking

Our low impact Hiking Program teaches our Scouts how to get out and enjoy nature without leaving a mark on it!

Jump Start Hiking Program

Map and Compass

Our Scouts all learn basic orienteering skills including use of both Engineer & Base Plate Compasses and how to read topographical maps.  They can plot a course, take a bearing and lead themselves out of trouble, or into a secret camping spot!

Scout Permits & Scout Permit Training Program

A carefully planned and well executed Scout Permit Program, highlighting safety and the proper use of equipment, qualifies our Scouts in 4 areas;

Knives · Stoves and Lanterns (white gas and propane) · Axe and Saw · Fire

Scouters - Teaching Scout Permits? Feel free to use our Scout Permit Training Program.  This program was developed with years of experience and after attending other courses we felt were not adequate.

Additional information can be found at the Stittsville Scout site.  Scouter Paul has done a GREAT job of creating a no nonsense, safety first training course for Scout Permits.  http://www.stittsvillescouts.org/scouttalk/viewforum.php?f=15

Pioneering, Knots and Lashings

Our Pioneering Skills Program is based on gaining a good foundation in rope, knot & lashing skills.  These are important skills which a Scout can and will carry with them through out their lives.

Canoeing

Every 2nd year we are hosted by the fine folks at 33rd Cambridge in a thorough canoe training course. We learn the basics of canoeing and also the fundamentals of self water rescue and second person rescue.  We also learn about back country camping and how to properly prepare and equip ourselves for a 1 week canoeing trip in Algonquin Park

Camping

Camping is a 4 season activity and we attack it with relish! (okay, a little worcesteshire sauce on the steaks!)

We do our best to get out once a month, and often are found hiking on other weekends.  There is no specific course outline, even though we are VERY fond of the following camps;

Winter Camping

Winter is one of the best times to go camping.  Lots of fresh air, great hearty food and a warm Adirondack shelter with straw on the ground!  Sigh, where do I sign up for that!  Our Scouts learn how to play safe and stay warm.  We have camped outside all months of the year and even recall a camp at -35C in tents!

Leave No Trace

Stuff every camper should know and practice!

Fire lighting - minimise the impact & which heat source is best.

Survival Skills

Our camping skills also include simple survival skills, like Hug a Tree and continue on to more advanced skills which include a Senior Scouts weekend where they are released into the wilds (near Drumbo) and made to survive with a kit they created and not much else!

Venturer Investiture

A team building exercise for youth in Cambridge to earn the priviledge of being part of a Venturer Company.  It is designed to get the youth into the community to research, explore and learn more about Cambridge, it's history and her people.
